Moncton, Halifax-Two of a Kind in Uranium Battle
"I believe this resolution needs to be passed tonight to protect our province too. I don't think it should be the garbage dump of North America..."
In stating this, Canada's Moncton, New Brunswick City Councilor Louisa Barton-Duquay also said it for us here in Pittsylvania County, VA, USA ! We really don't need it here, or there! (See reference article in below-blog post).
Moncton joined Halifax, Va's Town Council in voting to ban all uranium mining and exploration within their respective geographic limits. The rationale for both votes has been noted on this blog numerous times in the past.
However, our concern is not with the past, but, rather, with the future! In order to protect our pristine lands, our clear waters, our breathable air, our livestock and our pets, and our own and our offspring's' health both now and in the future, this trend must be repeated over and over again throughout Virginia, throughout New Brunswick, and, indeed, throughout all of North America!
The only clear way to succeed against the greed of the multi-national and local uranium corporations is to wage the battle in the smallest geo-political unit possible, namely, towns and city councils! After a ground-swell of these small victories, our state and national legislators will no longer be able to be swayed by lobbyists and campaign contributions from the corporates. Then , we will win!
HAPPY EASTER to all readers, whether supporters of our cause or not! The season is of sacrifice, renewal, and re dedication! We hope one or all of these touches you well!

Hello everyone,
The Moncton Town Council passed a RESOLUTION, not an ORDINANCE. A resolution is not binding on anything or anybody -- it's simply a stated wish, and it won't protect the city or prevent the uranium mine. It's futile. It's a waste of time, effort and paper.
Instead of exercising their local governing authority, this Canadian city council is begging the national and provincial governments to protect them from this corporate assault. And from what I've learned from my Canadian friends, the national and provincial governments never protect communities from corporate assaults -- just like here, in the good ol' US of A. Like the US federal and state governments, the Canadian national and provincial governments operate in the interest of maximization of corporate profits, and they don't let human and environmental concerns get in the way.
The Halifax Corporate Mining & Bodily Trespass Ordinance is a BINDING LAW that criminalizes chemical trespass, strips corporations of constitutional rights of personhood, and acknowledges the rights of ecosystems to thrive. It carries penalties and provisions for class-action lawsuits against the corporation and government bodies that permit/facilitate the mine, and places the burden of proof on the corporation and government bodies.
The Halifax Town Council isn't begging the state to do anything. They're saying to the state legislature, loud and clear, "Our duty is to protect the health, safety and wellbeing of the citizens of Halifax and the health of our environment, upon which all life depends, and to exercise our governing authority as delegated to us by the citizens of Halifax!!"
That must happen in every municipality in Southside. And Pittsylvania County must enact a similar ordinance banning uranium mining. If we don't make this happen, we're gonna get the mine.
I know this is very new to you. If you have questions about any of this, please don't hesitate to call me.
Peace and blessings,
Shireen
