Is a National Movement Emerging? Looks Like It Just Might Be!

From one of our favorite SCC affiliates comes a note from "Jackie" about a meeting that took place on Saturday, March 15, in Wyoming. Members of 10 environmental groups representing interests in 5 states met to share ideas on defeating uranium mining in their states. The note from our affiliate:

There was a gathering yesterday in Casper , Wyoming , among different groups from various states who have been researching the risks and dangers of uranium mining proposals in their communities. I will send you more details as I receive them from Jackie of Coloradoans Against Resource Destruction (CARD), which operates the www.nunnglow.com Web site. Jackie's note below says they plan to host another meeting (this time in Colorado ) with groups from all states who are currently facing this issue - and will be extending invites to Virginia groups as well. The defeat of SB525 is listed in the news section of the www.nunnglow.com site and they are using this as an example of how residents can work with concerned legislators who want to best protect health and natural resources by carefully and cautiously examining all the many facets of this issue.

From Jackie, this note:

It was a big press conference. People from North and South Dakota , Neb , Wyoming and Colorado came and wow many places are in much worse shape than Colo. We spent the day brainstorming and sharing information, we did plan another meeting and will be hope that your state and Texas can be in attendance here in Colorado, Marina will send out details, we absolutely want to "host" it in every sense including opening our homes and guest rooms and getting people from the Airport if needed to save money for those who travel. More later, I must catch up on real life for a few hours today and try to compose my thoughts for a summary of the meeting. Jackie

A more in-depth description of the meeting and the issues facing each of the participating states can be found on this page from CARD's website:

Take a look! It's well-worth the read. The issues will all be familiar ones. We're hoping that next year, Virginia will also have representatives in attendance!
