Uranium Questions For VUI, Inc

Questions for the Multi-National and Local Corporations that want to mine Uranium in Pittsylvania County:

Why should the CITIZENS of the state of VIRGINIA be required to tell a MULTI-NATIONAL CORPORATION exactly how to mine from our pristine lands the most dangerous commodity ever discovered by mankind?

In all other cases of this kind, the developer or industrial corporation tells the State what they intend to do and how they intend to do it, and then asks the state to study it and approve or deny the process.

VIRGINIA URANIUM wants to reverse this process!! It wants the state to spend its time studying the process and then tell VUI how to do it!!! Wow, what MULTI-NATIONAL CORPORATION would not want this process? It's a dream come true for VUI!!

Rather, I believe this is the job and definite requirement of the Multi-Nationals and all of Coles’ many local/state/multi-national companies!

Do Your Own Job, Walter Coles..............

I've not kept up with this issue like many have so maybe I've missed something. But I was under the impression that Mr. Coles was planning to pay for the study of the feasibility of mining on his land. I don't quite understand why you're telling him it's his job to tell the state how he intends to mine when he's offering to pay for someone knowledgeable to tell him the safest way to mine, if one exists. You seem to be mixing apples and oranges. Mr. Coles can't tell anyone how he plans to mine until someone studies the situation to see if mining is feasible. My guess is that at that time, Mr. Coles will let the state know how he plans to proceed. Of course there will need to be statutes enacted that permit the Dept of Mines in your state to develop standards and practices that allow and disallow certain things re: uranium mining, including which practices might be safer than others.

It seems to me that you've got the cart before the horse here. It seems Mr. Coles is years away from actually mining anything, assuming there is a study done re: the feasibility of the mining, the rules and regs that will govern that mining, the lifting of the moratorium, etc.

Your rant is several years ahead of the problem about which you rant.

And, while we're on the subject of ranting, I've seen other blogs where the opponents of the mining are referred to as hysterical and emotional, not logical and dispassionate. You sort of make their case, don't you?

This is not an accurate description of VUI's goals. Virginia Uranium is happy to give anyone the same briefing that they gave me back in February.

VUI's goals, as quoted directly from their briefing, are as follows:

"#1 to Implement the Virginia Energy Plan recommendations to study if uranium development can be done safely in Pittsylvania County, and #2 Maintain the moratorium on mining until study demonstrates uranium development can be done safely"

VUI's Vision:

"-we fully fund a comprehensive science-based study (we will pay for study and we will step back to ensure independence
-an independent credible institution to perform the study
-the study will dictate any action on the moratorium"

And further...

VUI is "dedicated to the highest principles of environmental safety, sound economic development, and the well-being of the community and region: Energy Independence, Community development, Conservation, Historic Preservation, Virginia's agricultural traditions, Regulatory benchmarks, and Virginia stakeholders."

Virginia Uranium wants the lode of uranium to be studied before proceeding with a solid plan of action. It's an if X, then Y situation.

How are they to know the best way to proceed if the only data specific to this area is 25 years old? They could propose all the plans in the world, but those who oppose mining would toss up studies and articles and sound bytes that would not be specific to our situation here in Southside Virginia. Would anyone take a plan seriously if it is not specifically catered to our climate and conditions?

I would invite anyone who is interested to please please please attend a VUI briefing. No one is trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes! VUI wants everyone to know what they are about, and, if I were they, I would resent the implication otherwise.

The only way to learn is to ask about it or, God forbid, STUDY IT!

Mr. Melton,

you haven't missed much.... you have got it right on the money!

I talk a lot about the cart being before the horse. I personally would like a study so that I may make an informed decision, and I believe that some who were undecided about that study were scared into thinking that the study and the mining would commence simultaneously. I would like to think that EVERYONE would want these answers, but I don't think that is going to be the case. I do, however, believe that those who want answers ought to have them.

But, anyhow, you hit the nail on the head with both your questions and your sharp logic.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Kudos.
