UPDATE: Council Refuses to Meet Early

Chatham Mayor George Haley advised SCC officials this afternoon that he was unable to get at least four (4) of the six (6) Council members to commit to come to the special called meeting he asked to occur on Wednesday, December 19, 2007. The purpose of the meeting was to consider a resolution similiar to the one Halifax Town Council passed on Monday of this week calling for a continued moratorium on uranium mining and milling in Virginia.

I personally am extrememly disappointed in whichever of the Council members refused to come. I can think of few things that would come before the health, wealth, lives and well-being of the residents that I represented if I were a Council member.

Their refusal to act now means that the political entity closest to the proposed mine will have taken NO OFFICIAL STAND prior to the two county boards having their meetings on January 3rd and 8th. That just the pits, folks!!!!! (Pun IS intended)

I call on all Chatham Council members to re-consider their decision and do so now! It's time for our elected officials to STAND UP and do the job we elected them to do-----vote to protect our interests!!! The multi-national corporations do not vote in Chatham.......................... WE DO !!

I'm with you John!

Our politicians need to TRULY represent US - THE CITIZENS THAT ELECT THEM!

If they need to know more about the subject (THIS LIFE THREATENING SUBJECT!) then they need to EDUCATE THEMSELVES!! There is plenty of information out on the web. JUST GOOGLE "URANIUM MINING".

SHAME ON THEM!
