Concerning Walter Coles' Jan. 7 letter, it is nice to see someone from Virginia Uranium finally admit that the company is not Virginia owned, even though you have to dig to find the admission - "Virginia Uranium Holdings, the parent company of Virginia Uranium Inc....[is] registered in Canada...."
It is quite irrelevant that the Coles and Bowen families presently control the Canadian company.
It is amusing that Virginia Uranium spokesmen accuse the Piedmont Environmental Council of finding Canadians sinister (Patrick Wales, Dec. 31, 2008, letter to Virginian- Pilot) and foreigners scary (Coles, Jan. 7, 2009 letter).
We simply have observed that Virginia Uranium is foreign owned, which it is, and expressed concern.
People incorporate in different states or countries for various reasons. Limitation of liability and protection against litigation are both reasons for doing this.
Indeed, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is now deciding whether certain uranium licenses can be issued to any U.S. company controlled by a foreign entity and whether such control is inimical to national interests - including health and environmental protections.
These questions are equally relevant to the Virginia debate.
