GRETNA - Gretna Town Council was asked Monday night to consider a resolution concerning possible uranium mining in the county.

"I represent people in Gretna who are concerned about mining and milling of uranium at Coles Hill," said Bunny Eanes, who lives on Leftwich Street. She brought the typed resolution and offered it to council members for consideration.

There were 10 people at the meeting in support of the resolution which is similar to others passed in Virginia Beach and Halifax.

The resolution states that the town would not be opposed to an unbiased, scientific study of the potential impacts of uranium mining and milling in Virginia by an independent entity.

It also states that, unless it can be demonstrated to a reasonable degree of scientific certainty that there will be no significant release of radioactive sediments into the air or downstream, the town would be opposed to mining and milling in Virginia, lifting the moratorium on uranium mining, or developing a regulatory framework for uranium mining and milling.
