To the Editor,

DID YOU KNOW that a public meeting is being held Tuesday, Jan. 6, at 6 p.m. at Chatham High School in Pittsylvania County by the Uranium Mining Subcommittee of the Virginia Commission on Coal and Energy? YOU SHOULD ATTEND.

DID YOU KNOW the uranium mining study affects everyone in Virginia, including you?

DID YOU KNOW a study is being developed on the aspects of uranium mining?

DID YOU KNOW that no mention has been made on the aspects of a uranium milling facility?

DID YOU KNOW the Coal and Energy Commission has already had two public hearings on the mining study in Richmond?

DID YOU KNOW of the 11 people on the Uranium Mining Subcommittee, none is from Pittsylvania County or even from a bordering county?

DID YOU KNOW that the majority of people I have talked with are totally against uranium mining and milling in Pittsylvania County and Virginia?

DID YOU KNOW that taxpayers paid $70 million to transport 500 tons of yellowcake (uranium) from Iraq to Canada?

DID YOU KNOW the Department of Energy announced Dec. 16 a plan to manage excess uranium inventories in the United States? It states it is expensive both to manage and secure.

DID YOU KNOW that a petition drive is underway to try and stop the mining and milling of uranium in Pittsylvania County?

DID YOU KNOW that children did a balloon experiment from Coles Hill (the proposed mine site) to see how far the contaminated dust might travel and one balloon ended up in Richmond, 125 miles away? It could have blown west, south or north also.

DID YOU KNOW that Virginia Beach is concerned about the harmful effects uranium mining and milling may have on its water supply 200 miles away and has passed a resolution against it?

DID YOU KNOW that studies have already been done on harmful health effects of uranium mining and milling in the past?

DID YOU KNOW that studies have already been done on the economic effects of hard rock mining in the past?

Call or write your supervisors, town councilmen, state delegates, state senators and attend the meeting Jan. 6, 2009, at 6 p.m. at Chatham High School!
