This Sunday morning there will be a special "Grand Canyon" edition of "This Week" on ABC

Last weekend we had the First Family visiting.

This weekend Republican Senator John McCain of Arizona, Democratic Senator Mark Udall of Colorado and Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar are here visiting. A press conference was held this afternoon to discuss canyon-related issues such as mining, visitation, air quality, the Colorado River, and the Glen Canyon Dam in Page, Arizona. The Secretary was also visiting to highlight the $10 million in projects under the economic recovery package that has been invested in the Grand Canyon area.

Senator McCain and Secretary Salazar also stopped in Superior, Arizona community meeting earlier today to discuss a proposed copper mine on federal land. Last month Secretary Salazar temporarily halted plans to halt uranium near the Grand Canyon. Senator McCain has opposed efforts to permanently halt the mining. Senator Udall chairs the the Senate's National Parks subcommittee. The topic of uranium mining around the Grand Canyon was surely discussed between the three of them.

Also on the agenda at the Grand Canyon was an interview with Senator McCain by George Stephanopoulos which will be aired this Sunday morning on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos" . Senator McCain has spent most of the August Senate recess with the Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan plus he met with Moammar Qadhafi. I'm sure all of that will be discussed with the topic of the Grand Canyon and the rest of the National Parks coming up also.

Senators Udall and McCain will tour Rocky Mountain National Park on Monday morning before holding a U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Energy and Natural Resources hearing in Estes Park. They will be discussing how climate change is taking a toll on national parks nationwide.

Next weekend Senator Udall will again be in Arizona at the Celebrate Arizona's National Parks expo on the University of Arizona campus. He will be particiapting in a panel discussion - “Community Conversation: The State of the National Parks.” For more information on the expo including other participants, times, locations, and events - click here.
