ELKTON, VA. — About 25 possible mining shafts in the Elkton area are being sealed off amid concerns of potential safety hazards.
The Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy awarded a $58,000 contract for a Christiansburg company to seal off and mark the possible shafts on the private land. Work is expected to begin soon.
The manganese mines in Hanse Mountain were in operation from 1888 to the mid-1930s.
Manganese was used mainly to manufacture steel. From 1867 to 1916, the state produced 55 percent of the manganese ore mined in the United States.
Officials say the old pits might appear to be depressions in the ground, but instead may have false bottoms that people and livestock could fall into. There also are environmental concerns.
