We've heard from one of the attendees of the Gretna Town Council meeting last night who says that there were approximately 18 attendees in addition to the Council. Jack Dunavant gave the Council a brief history of SCC and also explained SCC's stance against uranium mining at Coles Hill giving facts about the realities and dangers of the proposed mining. Apparently Jack's presentation was very well-received.
The Council members were cordial and asked many questions about the duration of the proposed mining, the size of the operation, health risks secondary to long-term, low-level radiation exposure, rivers at risk for contamination, the dangers of tailings, etc.
The council also asked for a copy of the Halifax chemical trespass ordinance for reference and further consideration. We hope that's a sign of good things to come from the Council!

I think that this shows that there is a growing movement in Southside Va and elsewhere to take control of this problem from the local focus and make it a local solution. With Halifax signed up, with Chase City/Mecklenburg County close to a decision, and with Gretna being receptive to the solution, it appears a local, ground-roots solution to the efforts of multi-national corporate uranium mining in Virginia may soon become a SUNAMI that can't be resisted by any person or state governmental authority or agency.
The power of government lies with the people who are willingly being governed..........not with any legislator, any executive, any agency of said government. People power begins and ends at the local level! Here is where the victory will be won!
