Braidwood, IL (AHN) - Exelon Corp. shut down two of its nuclear reactors in different parts of the nation this weekend after technical malfunctions.
Energy services provider Exelon (NYSE: EXC) is the largest nuclear operator in the U.S., and is also the nation's largest electric and natural gas utility.
With corporate headquarters in Chicago, IL, the first malfunction was nearby on Friday night at Exelon Nuclear's Braidwood Generating Station.
The Braidwood malfunction was in the cooling system control and caused an automatic shutdown of one of the plant's two nuclear reactors. There were no injuries, disruption of service or environmental damage from the incident and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission was notified.
Repairs were made and the Illinois plant resumed operations by 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
However, shortly before then, Exelon's plant in New Jersey went down. There was no release of radiation, risk to the public or injuries because of the malfunction.
The Oyster Creek Generating Station was manually shut down at 6:04 p.m. Saturday after one of its main transformers failed. The company has not given a time frame for completing repairs.
Oyster Creek Generating Station is the nation's oldest operating nuclear power plant. It has been generating electricity for 40 years and earlier this month renewed its license for another 20 years.
