Power Trio Share Views on Land Use

(Source: 12/12/07 issue of Danville Register and Bee)
While not specifically addressing the issue of local uranium mining, Governor Tim Kaine, state Senator Charles Hawkins, and NASCAR driver Ward Burton all made it plain on Tuesday that they strongly favor conservation and preservation of our farm lands. I would suggest that the difference between our local concerns here and their stated concerns are nearly identical in nature.

The event was the Governor's Forum on Land Conservation held in South Boston, VA at the Prizery where a surprisingly-large crowd of 185 interested parties attended. Gov. Kaine seeks to make land conservation an issue where he "makes his mark" in progress achieved. Burton has long been involved in habitat management, conservation, and youth education. Hawkins has represented a mostly rural farm district during his tenure in the Virginia General Assembly.

Comments made included:

Hawkins: "We need individuals who own the land, who understand the importance of the land and who are willing to do the things to ensure that our future does not disappear..."

Burton: "This is what defines quality of life.... Our property, our farms, our heritage. Land is like a child--it must be nutured...."

Kaine: "If we just kind of allow things to happen, then things will happen that we might later regret....
Gov. Kaine, hopefully, you will become actively involved and the scene below will NOT become the future of Chatham and Pittsylvania county! Please don't "regret letting things just happen"?
