CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- West Virginia Sen. Robert C. Byrd has waded into the debate over whether Massey Energy should help relocate a Raleigh County elementary school.
Byrd said Wednesday that Massey should act responsibly and provide assistance to replacing Marsh Fork Elementary.
The school is located within several hundred feet of a Massey-owned coal preparation plant, and is below a company coal slurry pond.
The West Virginia Democrat was responding to Richmond, Va.-based Massey's statement that it would not donate money to replace the school.
Byrd says replacing the school is not the taxpayers' burden. The burden should be on Massey to be a more responsible corporate citizen.
Massey did not immediately respond to a request for comment
